Statement: Burna Boy Publishes Letter Addressing Global Plastics Treaty Negotiations

Nairobi, Kenya (November 13, 2023) – Global recording artist, Burna Boy, currently on the North American leg of his “I Told Them” tour, published a letter today addressing the delegates of the third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-3) process convened by the United Nations this week in Nairobi, Kenya. The goal of the process is to develop a legally binding global agreement to address plastic pollution. His letter calls out the consequences of petrochemical pollution that “has infiltrated multiple facets of our lives, tainting our air and water.”

He expressed his serious concern for the environment:

“You may recognize me as Burna Boy, but my true identity is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, a name linked not only to my individuality but also to a profound connection with the environmental challenges plaguing our world.”

He also spoke of environmental degradation in his home country, Nigeria:

“My roots trace back to the South side of Nigeria, a region that bears the heavy burden of climate pollution. One disheartening revelation is that Port Harcourt, my cherished homeland, has been ranked among the world’s most polluted cities. Shockingly, it is estimated that Nigerians endure an annual exposure to pollution that surpasses what global health authorities consider safe. Pollution has infiltrated multiple facets of our lives, tainting our air and water. This is the stark reality of my people every day.”

His letter ended with a call to action:

“Today, I earnestly beseech the leaders of governments worldwide to heed the voices of those most acutely affected by this environmental crisis. We implore you to recognize the gravity of the situation and commit to curbing plastic production, thereby ending the needless poisoning of communities across the globe.”
